Have you ever found an error message in your windows event log with
“\Device\Harddisk3\Volume7 Read Error.”
Then you lost your hair and went mad trying to figure out which Hard Disk IS the 3rd hard disk according to windows.

Event Log Disk Error

Well, instead of developing telepathic abilities, you can use DD an open source piece of software that will list the volumes and funny windows name in a comfortable – easy to digest manner.

  1. Download DD (at the time of writing I have downloaded dd-0.6beta3.zip)
  2. Start CMD and find the extracted executable of DD.
  3. OR copy dd.exe to your c:\windows\system32 directory – or where ever your systemroot/windows system files are stored.
  4. When you are in CMD type dd --list to get a list of all the volumes/hard disks/storage devices.

Notice the letters below the \\?\Device\HarddiskVolume10
